Friday night found me reading about the passing of two very different people who, in their own unique and pioneering ways, changed the world because they changed people.
The world will forever be different because each saw a need and chose to do something about it.
Dr. Michael DeBakey, world renowned heart surgeon, and Ms. Melanie Mattson, one of the co-founders of FluWiki, have each stepped onto their next path, forever leaving us.
Dr. DeBakey reached into the human chest and repaired hearts and arteries. Ms. Mattson reached into the human psyche and inspired the metaphysical heart, forging cyber arteries connecting strangers who gather(ed) to find solutions to the countless personal and social issues of pandemic influenza.
I have long said that when we choose to interact with people we "touch" them, leaving our marks upon the person they are, forever altering who they may have been otherwise, even if on the surface undetectable. Sometimes the changes we bring to people are pronounced, and even every once in awhile, profound. It is the pronounced and the profound changes that ripple outward, in concentric circles.
The ripples Dr. DeBakey and Ms. Maadson created will continue to travel outward for a very long, long time, as those they "touched", each in their turn have "touched" numerous others, who touch uncounted others, the ripples ever widening, but never losing their initial strength or impact.
Last night I tossed two pebbles into the pond in homage and honor, and remembered how grateful I was that these two very different strangers lived.
Thank you both…..
